Good morning everyone and welcome to another edition of Lazy Sundays. The artist of choice for this week is Toots and the Maytals, a Jamaican musical group well known for their ska and reggae musical styles. Lead by Fred “Toots” Hibbert, The Maytals became one of the most popular vocal groups in Jamaica during the 1960′s alongside other such successful music groups of the time, The Wailers. This song, 54-46 That’s My Number was a breakthrough for the group and describes Toots’ time in prison for an arrest for possession of marijuana. The song has also been covered by several prominent groups, most prominently Sublime and The Clash (who pays tribute to the track in their song Jail Guitar Doors).

Toots and The Maytals – 54-46 That’s My Number

Although Toots & The Maytals never reached the same level of commercial superstardom in the United States as Bob Marley & The Wailers or Peter Tosh, Toots & the Maytals hold the current record of number one hits in Jamaica, with a total of thirty one. In 2005, the group released True Love, an album consisting of re-recorded versions of their earlier hits, alongside Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Trey Anastasio, No Doubt, Ben Harper, The Roots, and Shaggy. The album won the Grammy Award that year for best reggae album.

Toots and The Maytals continue to record and tour successfully to this day, with “Toots” Hibbert heading the group at the spritely age of 65. Here’s their tour list for the summer, unfortunately no dates scheduled for Toronto. So unless you feel like roadtripping to one of these venues, listening to these songs may be the closest you can get to this phenomenal Jamaican group.

Chill out to these reggae vibes and enjoy the beautiful weather this fine Sunday. Happy Mothers Day!

Alright so I have a bit of a confession to make. Today I bought my first album in a long, long time. How long? Let’s put it this way, the last CD I purchased was Sum 41′s Does This Look Infected? For those of you that know the album (and it’s a beauty), that thing was released  during the awkward formative years of middle school…..well for me at least. I try to support the artists best I can by going to their shows and buying their merch, but that can only go so far. So I made a promise to myself to buy more albums. CDs? Fuck no, it’s time to invest and restock the old music library with some vinyl! Not only does vinyl sound awesome, it will make your place look distinguished. Now all you need is that smell of rich mahogany and a warm glass of brandy to complete the swag.

Anyways enough of that, the reason you’re reading this is obviously because you’re a fiend for the Thrashing Thursdays! I’ve noticed that all previous Thrashing Thursday posts have focused primarily on blast off dubstep bangers. So I woke up today and was like “yo let’s stretch our wings on this and try some different genres with equal Thrashibility”. And then I was like “what constitutes Thrashibility”? First thing that came to mind was what’s the one artist you would most like to have play at your house party? After purchasing my first album in years today, the answer became obvious.

Beastie Boys! Mike D, King Ad-Rock and MCA are back with a few friends and the fantastic new album Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 (released May 3rd). The album has been repeatedly featured over Spacepack the past few weeks (here & here). The album was streamed a few weeks ago and it was so good that I felt obliged to buy it. The boys are back and they bring with them the same abrasiveness energy and utter disregard for silence that rocked house parties since 1980′s.

Don’t call it a come back, say welcome back! Here are a few tracks from their new album that are sure to blow the lid off any Popsicle stand,

Beastie Boys – Lee Majors Come Again (hear the songs by left clicking the download link, download by right-clicking)

Download (Love the false-start and record skip at 2:43)

Beastie Boys – Too Many Rappers f/ NaS [New Reactionaries Version]

Download (Great new version of an original song)

Beastie Boys – Don’t Play No Game f/ Santigold

Download (Carribean themed bash!)

And of course the Blast Off Banger,

Alex Metric – Sabotage (Beastie Boys Re-Edit)

Enjoy

Hello all and thanks for joining in for another edition of Lazy Sundays. Prepare to expand your mind to the sound of this week’s featured artist; Nightmares on Wax.

George Evelyn, the brainchild for Nightmares on Wax, is a DJ from Leeds, UK. Heavily inspired by soul music as well as the emergence of the hip hop scene in the late 1980′s (with groups such as the Sugarhill Gang), Evelyn’s early influences made him want to make “something that identified with the b-boys. We wanted to do tracks that had hip hop beats but experimented with ideas“. This merging of genres (as discussed in The Electro Wars) bridged a gap between soul music and hip-hop and was a strong force in the development of N.o.W.’s chilled-out lounge aesthetic.

Nightmares on Wax – Night’s Interlude You can hear the soul genre’s influence on Evelyn here with a great sample off a Quincy Jones song. This song is featured on later albums but altered slightly in each version.

Although N.o.W. began as a DJ based act, the contribution of studio artists on the LPs Smoker’s Delight (1995) and Carboot Soul (1999) made Evelyn rethink the musical dynamics of N.o.W. and allowed the group to play more like a band than a studio act. However, the drum beats featured in songs were not replaced by live drums because according to Evelyn, the “sound of the beats is what makes nightmares.

Nightmares on Wax – Finer   From Carboot Soul.  Sara Winton’s vocals take this track to the next level of chill.

Following the release of Carboot Soul, Evelyn laid low for awhile with N.o.W. and aimed to legitimize his name as a producer. He would go on to assist De La Soul with the production of their EP The Sound of Now (2002), and in the opinion of many helped to push the hip hop group back into the public eye.

De La Soul – Keep On (Produced by Nightmares on Wax)

Evelyn also began his own independent record label, Wax on Records. In his words, “The basic idea behind WAX ON records: the soul of NOW is to deliver quality music with that certain ‘soul factor’ and, for that purpose, to create a network of unknown, or known artists, djs, singers/MCs, producers and musicians alike,” George explains. “In the strong belief that when you have creative people all pulling in the same direction, something special is gonna happen…”. Most recently, iTunes has teamed up with WAX on Records to release albums from featured artists signed to the record label at reduced prices. Featured artists include, Aphex Twin, Battles, Boards of Canada, Jamie Lidell, Grizzly Bear, Autechre and Squarepusher to name but a few. Music from these artists can be purchased through iTunes.

Nightmares on Wax – 70s 80s (From the 2002 release, Mind Elevation. This was my summer jam last year)

Nightmares on Wax – 195 lbs. (From the 2008 release …thought so)

Nightmares on Wax – You Wish (From the 2006 release, In a Space Outta Time)

Nightmares on Wax has a long history of providing rich sounds that are perfect to post up and relax to. Whether you’re reaching for that glass of wine, that unlit Belmont or perhaps something more herbal, let this be the soundtrack to your Lazy Sunday.

If you like what you hear, then take a look at previous LAZY SUNDAY posts; Bob Marley, Al Green, Modest Mouse, Mumford & Sons & The Tallest Man on Earth. Cheers!

In lieu of yesterday’s celebration of 420, my ears have been turned onto Rastafarian music. This weeks Thrashing Thursday will provide a brief history on how dubstep music came to be, as well as some bumpin’ tracks with obvious reggae influence in them. But in order to better understand the genre of dubstep, we must first delve into The Origins of Dub.

Dub is a subgenre of music which grew out of reggae music in the 1960′s. Dub music consists of instrumentally remixing existing recordings, usually accentuating the drum and bass parts of the track (or the ‘riddim’ section). An excellent example of dub music is Dub Side of the Moon by the Easy Star All-Stars, a Jamaican tribute to Pink Floyd’s epic Dark Side of the Moon.

The Easy Star All-Stars have also remixed Radiohead (as Radiodread) as well as The Beatles’ Lonely Hearts Club Band album

Easy Star All-Stars – On The Run (Dub Remix)

The evolution of dub music has influenced many genres, but none more so than dubstep music. Dub has become the basis for both dubstep and jungle music (or drum n’ bass) because of the common use of dub elements in the genre (ie. emphasis on drum and bass patterns), and because both traditional dub and dubstep are often played at a similar tempo. Jungle music differs from dub and dubstep because the BPM of the track is usually doubled up, creating a speedy break-neck genre of music in the 150/170bpm range (the speed for dub and dubstep tracks fall at around the 70/140bpm mark). DJs have recently payed homage to the roots of the dubstep movement by including dub samples or clips of Jamaican music in the tracks they produce. So next time you hear a dubstep song with reggae influence, respect the artists because they are respecting their origins of music.

Bob Marley – Stir It Up (Styte Remix)

Golden Gloves are a phenomenal heavyweight Toronto based DJ/producer duo (Ben Rosenberg & Kevin Cowe). Show these guys some love through their Facebook Page and check some more of their sounds through Soundcloud; Golden Glove DJs

As I write this, I am sitting in a coffee shop in downtown Guelph and feel highly culturalized. I would like to share some of this ambient culture with the rest blogging world.

The group that has my ears burning on this particular day is Thievery Corporation, a Washington D.C. based DJ duo consisting of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, as well as supporting artists featured on their tracks. The Corporation takes on a wide range of musical styles from Brazilian bossa nova, reggae, jazz, Indian classical, dub and African to name but a few. The duo maintain a lounge aesthetic to most of the songs they produce and it is the perfect background music for studying or holding your next a super-suave dinner party.

My personal favorite from Thievery Corporation. American jazz saxophonist Stan Getz floats with a wispy, mellow timbre similar to the style of the late great idol, Lester Young. Luiz Bonfa (Brazil) provides sultry guitar rhythms to the song, but its Getz that gives this song its smooth and mellow character with his saxophone explosions at (0:22) and (2:52). For jazz aficionados, Getz’s break at 2:52 is better than sex

Thievery Corporation – Menina Flor f/ Stan Getz & Luiz Bonfa

Mellow tune here that has a reggae/lounge feel to it. Very chill and the horns at (1:39) are super effective as well as super cool.

Thievery Corporation – Amerimacka f/ Notch

And because arrangements of three’s seem to work better than two’s, here’s another track that covers The Doors Light My Fire. Brazilian vocalist Astrud Gilberto sets a different tone than the late Jim Morrison, but is equally effective as the Lizard King for  lighting that proverbial fire

Thievery Corporation – Light My Fire f/ Astrud Gilberto (The Doors Cover)

Impress your friends with your developed appreciation of worldly music styles and give into the Thievery Corporation. New album slated to be released sometime this year named Culture of Fear. This group is way too talented to do only one post on, so keep checking back for updates!

I’m mad tired so not really interested in typing on for too long (and no one likes reading lots of pointless info anyways). Here’s 6 projects being released between right now and about early March that have me most excited for 2011 in music. Follow me on Twitter.

January 25th: Talib Kweli – Gutter Rainbows

The Truth’s fifth solo album features production from the likes of 88-Keys, KHRYSIS!, and Ski Beatz. I showcased one of the singles off the album last month on the blog, so the hype has obviously been building for me. For those looking to listen to someone rap about something other than hoes, clothes and shiny cars, I point you in this direction.

Talib Kweli – Cold Rain

BONUS: Full album stream here.

The Bloody Beetroots, Jay-Z, Kanye, Diplo, The Cold War Kids, and Lupe on the other side.
