New remix from Skrillex that I’m totally digging. He’s taken SebastiAn and Mayer Hawthorne’s ‘Love In Motion’ and turned it inside out. The more subtle bassline bears little resemblance to the original, yet Sonny manages to tie things together nicely by keeping the funky vibe to back the nice vocals from Hawthorne. Everything’s smooth sailing til the crushing breakdown we’ve come to expect from one of dubstep’s best. – @SpcPck
In celebration of Harlan‘s birthday last week, he decided to give away his debut EP Native Son for free. Now while we are use to receiving things for free around these parts, this is legitimately free. Take advantage folks, only a few days left. Hit up the links below for everything Harlan, cause this kid is really good at what he does.
Here’s some soulful tunes from Austin’s Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears. The group inspired by the sounds of rock ‘n’ roll, funk and blues among others, released their second full-length Scandalousback in March. The visuals are for the album’s title track ‘Livin In The Jungle’, plus a little bonus track from their debut album Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is.
This weekend was crazy! A pair of blown out speakers and an empty keg are the product of a full-on weekend bender and now it’s time to sit back and slip into another Lazy Sunday post.
The artist of choice this week is French DJ/producer Breakbot. This guy brings unreal disco funk to each of his silky smooth tracks. How funky can one man be? Listen to his Dance on Glass Mix 03 and be prepared to break into rhythms you didn’t even know you were capable of. Imagine putting on the flyest pair of bell bottoms in your collection, some shine blockers and walking around town as if the god of funk had personal given you his swagger. Everyone would fall into dance behind you without question, abandoning all responsibilities to perform the greatest coordinated dance ensemble ever. Heck, John Travolta makes a cameo near the end for shits and gigs. Jean Tonique, Out Of Town.
So the epic three day Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival ends tonight with a huge lineup of diversely talented musicians. Lucky for us, the good folks at Coachella have been doing live broadcasts of their three main stages, Coachella Stage, Outdoor Theatre and Gobi. As 2Pac, Eazy-E and Biggie all once said, “We live for the funk, we die for the funk”. They said it best, so let’s get funky!
The Bar-Kays were a popular soul, R&B and funk group formed in the 1960′s. These guys are arguably the toughest bass slappers in the 1960′s and their always apparent horn sections has been flooding dancefloors since your parents’ era. The movie Superbad unearthed some of these timeless gems to use for their soundtrack and now I fee like it’s SpacePack’s civil duty to bring them to your ears. Bust out on funk with these,
Wanna see how these ministers of funk get down? This guitar line for sure belongs in an 80′s porno,
I came across a few crazy parallels while researching The Bar-Kays. Many of the original band members from The Bar-Kays were chosen to back Otis Redding in 1967 (see the post titled A Tribute to Otis.) On December 10, 1967, Redding, his manager, and band members Jimmy King (b. 1949; guitar), Ronnie Caldwell (b. 1948; electric organ), Phalon Jones (b. 1949; saxophone), and Carl Cunningham (b. 1949; drums) died in a plane crash in Lake Mona while on their way to a performance in Madison, Wisconsin. Trumpeter Ben Cauley survived the crash and bassist James Alexander was on another plane, since there were eight members in Redding’s party and the chartered plane could only hold seven. Cauley and Alexander rebuilt the group into the Bar-Kays you hear in today’s offerings.
Another interesting fact is the son of James Alexander is Phalon Anton Alexander, better known for his rap pseudonym Jazze Pha, well-known for his trademark hollering “Ladies and Gentlemen!” at the beginning, and sometimes at the end of the tracks he has contributed to.
Damn, the funk of this has really got to me. I’ve been grooving out to the sweet vibes of T.I.M.E. for a minute now and have finally got around to doing a post on these dudes. Combining elements of rock, soul and hip hop this duo of Reggie Tarver and Niko Sheffield exhibit talents that stay true to their Taking In Music Eternally namesake. The two began working together during their freshman year at Elizabeth City State University with Reggie on production and Niko on songwriting and vocals. Performing with a band live, the group has a similar jazzy, funk sound that’s reminiscent of Kids These Days. T.I.M.E. plays off their strengths by throwing more weight behind the mic with the rest of the group more than holding their own.
Timing things up pretty nicely, their new project The Written, The Gift and The Unknown drops today people! Make sure to reach their Tumblr for all the fresh goods. Treat your ears to some of their tracks below.
