Toned Down Tuesdays

I was going through my itunes recently and stumbled across an incredible track that I hadn’t heard in a couple of years. It was “No One Does It Like You” by the Department of Eagles. The Duo is composed of members Daniel Rossen (now of  Grizzly Bear) and Fred Nicolaus. They began jammin’ after being assigned to one another as roommates at NYU and from there began recording songs using samples and borrowed equipment. You can really hear Grizzly Bear style in this song, very smooth vocals and unique instrumentals. The drum beat is sampled from the Ronettes and aides in creating the track’s very laid back atmosphere.

Elton John’s “Your Song” is one of the most covered ballads in recent rock’n'roll history. Since it’s 1970 release, the B-Side from “Bring Me To The Pilot” has been covered over 15 times by many artists, including the likes of Rod Stewart, Billy Paul and Three Dog Night. The song is perfectly romantic in it’s original form however Ellie Goulding’s rendition, off her album “Lights”, provides a uniquely haunting spin to the tune.

PJ Harvey is a master of experimentation. A seeker of originality, Harvey’s sound is never duplicated from album to album. This is true for Let England Shake. Her music is the result of a  combination of influences like fellow english poet T.S. Eliot and musical groups the Doors and The Pogues – as well as being inspired by paintings from Salvador Dali. Directed by the art of these past visionaries, PJ Harvey takes a critical stance on contemporary political turmoil in Afghanistan and Iraq – and does so effectively. Let England shake is considered to be one of the best albums of 2011 so far, take a listen and see if you agree.

Well it is tuesday again and I am feeling as toned down as ever. Having just completed a tough streak of exams, I’m using this Tuesday to refuel my engines and find my lost chi. The band I have selected this Tuesday, Horse Feathers, has some of the most low key string folk i’ve ever heard, perfect for relaxing. Their 2008 album, House With No Name, is the best album for rainy days and reflection. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a few minutes and listen to a couple of folk songs.

P.S. Scroll Down to hear “Vivian” by Delta Spirit – It is also a perfect Toned Down Tuesdays Tune

There is something enchanting about the Fleet Foxes, something timeless. Their refreshing style is romantic as well as bluesy, and displays influences from both classical and contemporary genres. This was the case for their first album, self titled “Fleet Foxes” which was a hit with both Critics and Fans alike. Finally after 2 years of waiting, the Fleet Foxes are coming out with their second album “Helplessness Blues”, which has been said to be an unpolished, less poppy departure from their first record. The drop date for the new disc is May 3rd. I’ve already had my self a listen and folk fans I do not think you’ll be disappointed, here are some new songs off the album:

P.S. The Fleet Foxes have recently added Toronto to their summer tour schedule!

Meet The Raveonettes! Man this group is funky. The duo has gone through many line-up changes over the years, but for their last few albums they’ve consisted of Sune Rose Wagner on guitar and vocals and Sharin Foo on drums, bass and vocals. This Danish group uses various influences to create a unique sound, there are traces  of 50′s and 60′s surfer rock in the guitars while the vocals harmonize with one another like the Everly Brothers. The track “Forget That You’re Young” is off their latest album, Raven in the Grave.

Okay friends it is time that I introduce your ears to Jill Harris. This friend of mine has always had a terrific voice but now it has been recorded and I feel it is my duty to share it with you all. Jill, on her song “Wildlife Child”, exhibits an incredible vocal range that mirrors that of fellow Canadian singer/ songwriter Joni Mitchell. Match the vocal talent with her fantastic lyrics and you have a song that  will stick in your head for days. She is currently studying music at Humber College and on March 30th she will be performing in the school’s final recital, the tickets are free so if you’re available I suggest you treat yourself and show up!
